- Modern Networks and Wi-Fi (2000s): Wireless (Wi-Fi) became very popular in the end of 2000 and this technology gave the power to connect computers and devices with each other without any wire and today mostly wireless network is used.

Now there are some key characteristics that define a computer, which ensure that data can be transferred in a secure, reliable and fast manner. Some key characteristics of computer networking are given below: –
- Reliability:- It designs the computer in such a way that it should be RELIABLE, which means that the data should reach the receiver without any error and on time. If there is a problem in any part, then the other parts of the network keep transferring that data.
- Scalability:- A good network is one that can grow easily, for example, if we have to add more devices or expand the network, then this should be possible without any issues.
- Security:- Security is very important in computer networking. When data and information are transferred on the network, security is important, for which techniques like encryption and firewall are used so that the data is protected from unauthorized access.
- Speed and Performance:- The speed and performance of networking are very important. The performance of the network depends on bandwidth and latency. Bandwidth means how much data can be transferred at one time and latency means how much time it takes for the data to be transmitted. This is called latency. Now the better both are, the more fast and responsive the network will be.
- Cost-effectiveness: It is very important to keep cost in mind while building and using a network. The network should be designed in such a way that it is cost effective and can easily handle future upgrades.
- Resource Sharing: The major benefit of networking is that devices can share resources like printer, file and internet connection. What happens due to this is that both cost and time are saved.
